Historical trail mix

I often find Maureen Dowd's columns annoying, but she's written an amazing review of Arthur Schlesinger's posthumous Journals, which have recently been published in a hefty volume. She deems them "historical trail mix" for the way they mix and match Monroes (Marilyn and James), Kennedy's, history, and highballs. It's hard for me to imagine as prolific a historian as Schlesinger still having time to hang out with American royalty, but this historian-as-fly-on-the-wall followed the president from the oval office to the cocktail hour without a second thought.
Seems like a must-read for people writing histories of the Kennedy years. Where else will you find musings on the scope of history mixed in with so many fantastic anecdotes - a dinner-jacket-wearing Teddy Kennedy jumping into a pool as Ben Bradlee looks on with horror, Schlesinger's views of Jackie Kennedy/Onassis, etc.
