daughter of slaves

Reading the other day about the last surviving American WWI veteran got me thinking: are there any living Americans whose parents were slaves? Their parents would have been born in 1865 at the latest (not 1863, since the Emancipation Proclamation didn't actually free all the slaves in the South), so the latest a child would be born would be the very early 20th century, putting their current age in the hundreds.

The answer is yes:

Gertrude Baines, a 114-year-old California resident, will likely be crowned the world's oldest woman, according to the organization that keeps track of such honors....

Baines -- born to former slaves in a small town south of Atlanta, Georgia, in 1894 -- now lives in a Los Angeles nursing home.

She's got the old time language, too:

Baines appeared cheerful and talkative when the Los Angeles Times interviewed her in November as she cast her vote for Barack Obama for president, whom she said she supported because "he's for the colored people."

"I'm glad we're getting a colored man in there," she said.

As the article points out, the term "African American" didn't exist until Baines was well into her 70s.
