Communist Catholics. Or, back in time with GWB
Historian Judith Shklar, in 1964:
“The either-or, for-us-or-against-us mentality does more…to explain political trails under totalitarian regimes than any theory of historical responsibility. In Nazi Germany the Catholic Boy Scout organization was dissolved on the basis of a decree outlawing communist activities. Since anything that threatened German unity was held to aid communism, it followed that a divisive group, competing with the Hitler Jugend, was in effect a communist organization. In other words, ‘objectively’ Catholics are communists, even if ‘subjectively’ this might not be quite the case.” (from Legalism, 205)
The more things change the more things stay the same.
(Note that I don’t think GWB is actually a totalitarian. At least not from a “subjective” standpoint. Also see here where pro-war pundit (at least originally) Andrew Sullivan, rather than dismiss this whole "objective" bs, is forced to admit that he is objectively pro-Kim Jong Il)
