Yes, but is he racist enough to be president?

The State newspaper of Columbia, South Carolina, reported the following in 1903:
“Because he was said not to be ‘sound’ on the negro question, there was a hint some weeks ago that Prof. John Bassett Moore of Columbia university, who is being pushed for the presidency of the University of Virginia, would not be in the running. Thomas Nelson Page, the well known writer is one of the most influential of the university’s alumni. He said today that he knew of no opposition in any quarter against Mr. Moore for his alleged views on the negro question and that Virginia alumni both here and in New York are working hard for his election. The election occurs June 13, and Mr. Page is one of many who predicts this choice of Mr. Moore."
Moore withdrew his name from the race, so the issue was moot anyway, but wow.
